North York Arts: Leveraging Mentorship for Long-Term Sustainability
Christina Giannelia, Executive Director of North York Arts (NYA), leads an organization dedicated to making the arts accessible and engaging for over 500,000 residents in North York. NYA offers a diverse range of programs, including public art initiatives, festivals, workshops, and artist residencies, all while providing paid opportunities for artists. Giannelia is especially proud of the collaborative spirit that drives the organization, encompassing the staff, Board, artists, and facilitators who work together to enrich the community. “It’s a great group of smart and ambitious people eager to share art with the community,” she says, noting NYA’s growing reputation, particularly post-pandemic.
For NYA, artsvest has been a catalyst for growth and sustainability. In an interview with the artsvest team, she said that the mentorship program was particularly impactful, including a pivotal one-on-one session with mentor Derek Stevenson. His advice on non-profit sustainability and strategic program prioritization helped inform the creation of NYA’s strategic plan, setting the organization up with a sustainable and more streamlined path to achieve their goals. The matching funds provided by artsvest were equally transformative, enabling NYA to host the Inspire North festival, a free community event that showcased local artists while strengthening ties with businesses and the local BIA. Giannelia credits artsvest’s matching funds as the much-needed financial support that went directly into establishing new community partners and supporting local artists.
When it comes to the relationship between local businesses and the arts, Giannelia notes that it is vital to remain connected in our shared goals. “The arts enhance local communities, as do businesses, and when we work together, we all benefit. We all have a commitment to building vibrant, thriving neighborhoods.”
Giannella encourages other organizations to consider artsvest, not only because of the financial and strategic resources available, but also the meaningful collaboration that the program inspires. The artsvest program’s unique approach to training and mentorship allows organizations from across the country to find innovation and inspiration amidst a vast network of mentors and colleagues in the sector. With artsvest’s support to date, Giannelia feels that NYA is more equipped than ever to continue to deliver impactful arts experiences that celebrate community and the arts in North York.
