2025 Edmund C. Bovey Award Recipients

Laura Dinner & Richard Rooney

Named after the first chairman of Business / Arts, the Edmund C. Bovey Award recognizes an individual or couple who have demonstrated a lifetime of significant philanthropy and/or volunteer leadership in arts and culture in Canada.

Laura Dinner and Richard Rooney are being honoured with the 2025 Edmund C. Bovey Award for their remarkable legacy of philanthropic leadership and volunteerism in support of the arts in Canada.

For decades, Laura and Richard have been passionate champions of Canadian culture, offering generous financial support and thoughtful leadership to many institutions, including the Stratford Festival, the National Ballet of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Gardiner Museum, Tarragon Theatre, and more.

Their involvement with the Stratford Festival spans more than two decades. Richard has twice served on the Board of Governors, contributing twelve years of governance grounded in a deep belief in introducing young people to Shakespeare. Together, they have encouraged and supported every significant Stratford initiative of the last twenty years—from arts education and new play development to digital innovation, strategic planning, and capital projects.

“Richard and Laura have always been concerned about the long-term health of the Festival,” said Antoni Cimolino, Artistic Director, Stratford Festival. “Their care for the Festival’s mission and their personal investment in its artists, staff, and volunteers is exceptional.”

At the National Ballet of Canada, Laura and Richard’s support spans operational needs and special projects. As members of the Producers’ Circle and as Production Underwriters, they continue to invest in bold new productions and the creative process that brings them to life. Laura also serves on the Board of Directors and as Chair of the Development Committee.

2025 Peter Herrndorf Arts Leadership Award Recipient

Christopher Deacon, President & CEO, National Arts Centre

Established in 2015, the Peter Herrndorf Arts Leadership Award recognizes an arts leader who has spent a lifetime fostering the arts in Canada by building partnerships to ensure a vibrant cultural sector.

Christopher Deacon is being celebrated for his extraordinary 44-year career that includes 38 years at the National Arts Centre (NAC). His leadership has enabled the NAC to amplify Canadian voices, embrace bold artistic work, engage with new audiences, and reflect the diversity, ambition and creativity of Canada on the NAC’s four stages, and on stages across the country.

Deeply committed to Canadian artists, Christopher Deacon has championed their growth on national and international stages, while ensuring the NAC remains a vital, inclusive cultural institution for all.

As President and CEO of the NAC since 2018, Deacon has guided the NAC through defining milestones. The National Creation Fund has invested more than $15 million in 100 ambitious new Canadian productions, including Salesman in China, Mahabharata and Empire of Wild. During his tenure, NAC Indigenous Theatre launched its first season, and the NAC Orchestra expanded its international reach with major recordings and tours. He also led two strategic plans focused on supporting the performing arts sector and broader audience engagement, and helped launch the NAC Foundation’s $100 million campaign to support post-pandemic recovery. A philanthropic champion, he continues to build essential support for the NAC’s long-term impact and resilience.

“Through his vision, support, and openness, Christopher has helped our dreams, and the dreams of artists we serve, come true,” shared Ravi Jain and Miriam Fernandes, Co-Artistic Directors, Why Not Theatre.

“Christopher’s tenure is marked by a deep belief in artists, a bold commitment to equity, and a determination to ensure the NAC is a home for all Canadians,” reflected Susan Glass, Chair, NAC Foundation, and Guy Pratte, Chair, NAC Board of Trustees.

Christopher Deacon’s impact goes beyond any single program or project. His legacy is a stronger, more inclusive, and more ambitious NAC, and a Canadian arts sector better equipped for the future. His time as President and CEO of the NAC will conclude in December 2025.

2025 Arnold Edinborough Award Recipient

Umair Jaffar, CEO, Small World Music

Named after the founding president of Business / Arts, the Arnold Edinborough Award recognizes a young changemaker for their outstanding contributions to the Canadian arts sector.

Umair Jaffar is being recognized for his community-driven leadership and efforts to expand access and opportunity in the arts.

As CEO of Small World Music, Umair has redefined the organization’s focus, strengthening its operations, expanding its reach, and prioritizing inclusion. Through strategic partnerships and innovative programming, Small World Music now supports over 1,700 artists annually—more than 90% of whom come from underrepresented communities. This includes launching Canada’s only music incubator dedicated to refugees, newcomers, and BIPOC talent.

“Umair not only stabilized but also expanded the organization, demonstrating remarkable financial acumen and strategic thinking,” said Ayesha Chatterjee, Chair of Small World Music. “Under his leadership, our team and budget grew, and our programming contributes to a richer, more inclusive cultural landscape.”

His volunteerism and dedication to the arts extend across the sector. Notably, he helped lead the evolution of Folk Music Ontario into the national organization Folk Canada, where he now serves as Treasurer. He also lends his expertise to CAPACOA, the JUNO Awards, Toronto Metropolitan University’s Creative School, and Humber Polytechnic’s music program, helping shape and inspire the next generation of cultural leaders.

“What I admire most is Umair’s unwavering commitment to building bridges—between communities, across cultural boundaries, and within the arts sector itself,” shared Owais Lightwala, Assistant Professor, Toronto Metropolitan University. “His work creates space for underrepresented voices while setting a powerful example of leadership and innovation.”

2025 Corporate Champion of the Arts Award Recipient

The Corporate Champion of the Arts Award recognizes a corporation that has strengthened arts and culture in Canada through its long-standing support of and commitment to the sector.

Their community partnerships span coast to coast, with support for organizations such as Arts Umbrella, Audain Art Museum, Bard on the Beach, The National Ballet of Canada, Vancouver Art Gallery, and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Their commitment to the arts goes beyond financial contributions, incorporating volunteerism and sponsorship, all anchored in trust, collaboration, and lasting partnerships.

2025 Community Impact Award Recipients

QuadReal Property Group and Arts Etobicoke

The Community Impact Award recognizes an arts and business partnership that has enhanced the quality of life and enriched a local cultural scene through an innovative program, partnership or neighbourhood revitalization initiative.

Through the creation of Cloverdale Common, a vibrant new gathering space in Cloverdale Mall, Arts Etobicoke and QuadReal Property Group are working together to deliver a thriving community hub that supports artists, engages seniors and youth, and strengthens social bonds in Etobicoke.

Animated with input from local residents, this space enables community members to experience art, strengthen social networks, and learn. Cloverdale Common has welcomed over 15,000 community members and supported more than 200 local artists. From free art classes and exhibitions to workshops and social events, the space is a cultural and community anchor in the neighbourhood. It also provides a venue for arts programming and partnerships with local organizations, including Workman Arts, Muslims in Public Space, and ESS Support Services.

This meaningful partnership provides a model through which other arts organizations and developers can work together to support local communities and ensure a thriving and vibrant city, filled with art, culture, and connection.
