Dear fellow Canadian Arts Summiteer,

I am delighted to announce our 2019 Summit: Culture Shifts | Transformations culturelles. From April 11-13, we will convene in Canada’s beloved cultural hotspot and my hometown of Montreal. It’s been five years since the Summit was last here, and we have much to share with the national community including a host of new cultural venues concentrated in the Quartiers des Spectacles downtown entertainment district.

Important dates and locations

The 2019 Canadian Arts Summit will begin on April 11 at 1 p.m. and finish on the evening of April 13. (Note: A full schedule of Summit activities will be posted in late January at www.businessandarts.org/canadian-arts-summit)

Program events will take place across multiple spaces in Montreal, including the Musée des Beaux Arts, The Wilder Centre, and the newly opened home of Les 7 Doigts de la Main, among others.

2019 Theme: Culture Shifts

The focus of the 2019 Summit is on expanding our impact as cultural institutions as we strive to meet the social challenges of our time.

• What is the role of the arts in responding to the contemporary social condition shaping a new generation of public discourse, behaviour and policy?
• How can the artist remain at the forefront of productive social change in these disruptive times?
• As we experience an intensifying of identity politics, what is the role of the arts in helping us understand each other?
• How can we embrace greater responsibility in creating an empathetic society?
• As cultural institutions, we have many assets to leverage, including our public spaces.
• How do our spaces express our values?
• How do we create new points of access and exchange inside the physical and virtual walls of our institutional structures?

At last year’s Summit, Culture Track Canada offered us new insights into the changing behaviours of Canadian cultural audiences. We learned that audiences value cultural experiences that ultimately nurture empathy, connection and perspective. Relevance, in particular, is a precondition for success. Many respondents who didn’t engage reported feeling that the experiences on offer “weren’t for someone like me”

Results also revealed that audiences are divided on how, and whether, technology should play a role in the cultural experience. Many more seek to relieve stress and prefer analogue experiences to those that are digitally mediated because they feel more authentic and enjoyable and allow for focused engagement. Empathy and reciprocity were also cited as attributes that individuals seek in committing to organizations. Loyalty can no longer be transactional. Philanthropically we learned that audiences need us to place greater emphasis on culture’s distinctive social impact in order to attract more support.

Nous avons le plaisir d’annoncer le programme 2019 du Sommet canadien des arts Culture Shifts | Transformations Culturelles. Du 11 au 13 avril, nous nous réunirons dans le haut-lieu culturel canadien et ma bien-aimée ville de résidence, Montréal. Il y a cinq ans le Sommet était organisé ici et nous avons beaucoup à partager avec la communauté nationale notamment des nouveaux lieux culturels concentrés dans le Quartier des Spectacles, le quartier du divertissement du centre-ville.

Dates et lieux importants

Le Sommet canadien des arts 2019 commencera le 11 avril à 13 heures et finira le soir du 13 avril. (Remarque : le calendrier complet des activités du Sommet sera posté à la fin du mois de janvier ici : www.businessandarts.org/canadian-arts-summit)

Les évènements programmés se tiendront dans de multiples espaces dont, entre autres, le Musée des Beaux-Arts, le centre Wilder et le siège nouvellement ouvert du collectif Les 7 Doigts de la Main.

Le thème de 2019 : Transformations Culturelles

• Quel est le rôle des arts pour répondre aux conditions sociales contemporaines qui façonnent une nouvelle génération de discours public, d’attitude et de politique ? 
• Comment l’artiste peut-il rester au premier plan du changement social productif dans notre époque déstabilisatrice ?   
• Alors que nous vivons une intensification de la politique identitaire, quel est le rôle de arts pour nous aider à mieux comprendre l’« autre » ?
• Comment pouvons-nous assumer une plus grande part de responsabilité dans la création d’une société empathique ? 
• En tant qu’institutions culturelles. Nous avons de nombreux atouts à faire valoir notamment nos espaces publics. Comment faire en sorte que nos espaces expriment nos valeurs ? 
• Comment pouvons-nous créer de nouveaux points d’accès et d’échanges à l’intérieur des murs physiques et virtuels de nos structures institutionnelles ?

Le programme complet sera annoncé au début de l’année 2019. Les inscriptions seront ouvertes peu après cet annoncement.
