2024-2025 Leadership Program

Nurturing Excellence in Arts, Culture, and Heritage Leadership


As part of our 50th anniversary programming, Business / Art presents a one-year leadership program to empower arts, culture, and heritage leaders across Canada. Aimed at supporting the professional development of 25 leaders who are driving the next wave of artistic development in Canada, this program looks to nurture a diverse talent pool and help bridge leadership gaps within Canada’s large arts, culture and heritage organizations.


Program Overview and Key Components

 

This program is intended for those interested in pursuing senior roles in large arts, culture, and heritage organizations.

From March 2024 to February 2025, this one-year program provides career development opportunities for up to 25 arts leaders from across Canada. Participants will have direct access to established leaders from Canada’s largest cultural organizations, emphasizing co-learning opportunities for advisors and participants.

2024 Canadian Arts Summit Participation: 

The program will launch at the 2024 Canadian Arts Summit where participants will connect with their advisors and engage in Summit programming and networking opportunities from March 21-23, 2024, at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.

Individuals will receive:

  • A complimentary invitation to attend the 2024 Canadian Arts Summit (registration valued at $840)
  • Three nights of accommodation at the Banff Centre provided by Business / Arts (valued at $830)
  • A contribution of up to $750 towards travel costs * (participants travelling from Northern Territories or Atlantic Canada may receive up to $1000)

Knowledge-Sharing Sessions:

Following the 2024 Summit, participants will engage in monthly one-on-one sessions with a senior leader from a prominent cultural organization. These sessions will facilitate reciprocal learning, provide leadership guidance, and create networking opportunities to enhance professional development.


Call for Recommendations

Business / Arts is seeking recommendations for 25 arts leaders, interested in pursuing senior roles within large arts, culture and heritage organizations to participate in this one-year program.

Eligibility: 

To qualify for the program, individuals must:

  • Be professional arts workers (part-time or full-time)
  • Be permanent residents of Canada
  • Be available to attend the Canadian Arts Summit from March 21-23, 2024, in Banff, Alberta
  • Be able to commit to monthly knowledge-sharing sessions
  • Have demonstrated leadership experience within medium (approximately $1.5 to $3M) or large (over $3M) arts, culture, or heritage organizations in Canada*.
  • Aspire to hold a senior leadership role within a large Canadian arts, culture, or heritage organization

There is no age limit for participation and we welcome individuals from diverse backgrounds and positions within the arts sector, including executive leaders, directors of departments such as development, communications and marketing, public programming, and more.

*Please note that the size categories are guidelines, and the mentioned financial thresholds serve as suggestions rather than strict criteria. We recognize that budgets can vary.

Business / Arts is committed to equity in our policies, practices, and programs. We will be prioritizing submissions from individuals who identify as Indigenous, racialized, 2SLGBTQ+, living with a disability, or are part of a religious or language minority.

Expressing Interest: 

  • Interested individuals can express their interest by completing the form by Thursday, February 15, 2024.
  • The form requires contact information, an up-to-date C.V., and a one-page bio.
  • Recommendations can be made by a Canadian Arts Summit delegate, a senior arts leader, or through self-recommendation.
  • Please note that shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide two references as part of the selection process.

Eligibility

Can I apply for the program if my organization’s budget is under $1.5M?

Our budget guidelines are provided as reference points, not strict eligibility criteria. We understand that the scale (small, mid, large) of an organization’s finances in each region of Canada is unique. The goal of the program is to support emerging leaders on their pathway into senior leadership roles in major cultural institutions. We encourage you to apply if you are interested in a career in a large arts, culture, or heritage institution in Canada.


I am not a permanent resident. Can I still apply?

We appreciate your interest. However, candidates must be permanent residents or citizens of Canada to be eligible.


I hold the title of “Director” Am I considered an emerging leader? I recently turned a certain age, am I eligible to apply?

Our definition of “emerging” is not tied to age or title, but rather to your leadership journey within the arts sector. Neither age nor title is a disqualifying factor; the panel will evaluate your candidacy based on your current role, past leadership experience, and your interest and potential to assume a higher leadership position within a large Canadian arts organization in the future.


I’ve worked in both large and small organizations. Do I qualify if I’m currently in a smaller organization?

Yes, we consider candidates from various organizational backgrounds, including those who have transitioned from larger to smaller organizations. Please provide a detailed bio and CV highlighting your leadership experience.

Timeline

When will shortlisting/selections be announced?

We aim to complete the shortlisting process and make announcements by the last week of February. Please keep this date in mind and watch for updates.

Application Process

How does the self-recommendation option work in the application?

If someone, such as a mentor, senior colleague, or an arts leader, has introduced you to the program, you can list them as the recommender. If you are being recommended by someone, please select “no” on the self-recommendation section in the application to indicate that you have a recommender.


Can I include a cover letter with my resume in the application?

Please, only include a bio and CV in the application.
